Area bump charts, also known as ranked area charts, show how categories move up or down in ranking over time. The area under the lines represents the values, making them ideal for situations where both ranking changes and value trends are important.
You can create them in Flourish by making a stacked area chart and enabling sorting in the settings.
To create a ranked area chart,
- 1
-
Start from any Line, bar, pie visualization and select area chart (stacked) from the Chart type dropdown.
- 2
-
Add your data to the template. It should have the same structure for a typical area chart.
- 3
-
Go into the chart type settings and under Stack sort mode, choose ascending or descending to produce an area bump chart.
TIP: Area bump charts are most effective when using a small number of categories (typically 4-7). With many categories, the chart can become cluttered and difficult to read.
